Seismic Behavior of Direct Displacement-based Designed Eccentrically Braced Frames

Authors

Abstract:

Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) is a performence-based seismic design method that has been proposed and well developed over the past two decades to design RC frame structures, shear walls and bridges. In this method, the behavior of a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) sysytem is approximaeted by an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) substitute structure. Although this method has been utilized to design the abovementioned structures, however, there is just one comprehensive DDBD method to design steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) in the literature. The purpose of this study is to investigate nonlinear seismic behavior of the DDB designed EBFs with short, intermediate and long link beams and estimate their seismic demands. To this end, twelve 3, 5, 9 and 12-story EBFs were designed using the DDBD method. To simulate the nonlinear cyclic behavior of link beams, a macro-model proposed in the literature was adopted and validated with the available tests results. In order to describe material nonlinearity of the framing members in the macro-model, distributed plasticity fiber based model was used. After validating the FEM macro-modeling technique of link beams, seismic behavior of the 2D EBFs was investigated with both pushover analysis and nonlinear time-history analysis under a set of selected earthquake records using the structural analysis software OpenSees. The results showed that the DDB designed EBFs generally can reach their anticipated performance level. Also, it was found that the overstrength of the frames depends on their links length ratio.

Seismic Yield Displacement Profile in Steel Eccentrically Braced Frames

Displacement-based methods are recognized as appropriate approaches to reach the goals of performance-based seismic design method. In the direct displacement-based seismic design method, the seismic yield displacement is applied as one of the important design parameters. In this paper, a new relation is suggested to determine the lateral displacement pattern at first yielding of eccentrically b...

A Target Displacement for Static Pushover Analysis to Estimate Seismic Demand of Eccentrically Braced Frames

A main challenge for performance-based seismic engineering is to develop simple, practical and precise methods for analyzing designed buildings and assessing existing structures to satisfy considerable performance objectives. Pushover analysis is a simplified nonlinear analysis technique that can be implemented for estimating the dynamic demands imposed on a structure under earthquake excitatio...

SEISMIC RELIABILITY ASSESSMENT OF OPTIMALLY DESIGNED STEEL CONCENTIRCALLY BRACED FRAMES

The main aim of this study, is to evaluate the seismic reliability of steel concentrically braced frame (SCBF) structures optimally designed in the context of performance-based design. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method and neural network (NN) techniques were utilized to conduct the reliability analysis of the optimally designed SCBFs. Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) trained by back propagati...

Seismic Behavior of Asymmetric Two-Story X-braced Frames

Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) are one of the efficient lateral load resisting systems in high seismicity regions. One of the common problems with the use of concentrically braced frames is limitation in the architectural application and position of the openings. Two-story X braced frames have more advantages than other configurations of concentrically braced frames, since in many cases th...

Assessment of Seismic Behavior of Eccentrically Braced Frame with Double Vertical Link (dv-ebf)

This paper is an experimental study on the behavior of vertical shear link in the single and double configurations. There have been three specimens selected for examining the effects of different details .The first specimen was an I section with no stiffener, while the second specimen composed of I section with stiffeners designed according to AISC 2005. Third specimens were composed of two I s...

Development of Self-Stabilizing Links for Eccentrically Braced Frames

This paper highlights aspects of the development of self-stabilizing links having tubular cross-sections for use in eccentrically braced frames (EBF’s). EBF’s utilizing this type of link could be used in bridge piers or other applications where lateral bracing to prevent lateral torsional buckling is difficult to provide. The development of design recommendations for these types of links consis...
